In the leptospira
laboratory, serologic and bacteriologic diagnosis of leptospirosis in
animals and human are carried out.
By using MAT (Microscopic Aglutination Test) and ELISA, antibodies
against laeptospira strains can be detected in blood samples suspected with
infection. Indirect Floerescant
Antibody Test (IFAT) and PCR test are under investigation and will be
established in the laboratory soon.
Our laboratory has a collection of 41 standart strains provided from
international referance laboratories and 27 local strains isolated in
Turkey. These starians have been passaged both in animals and culture
media (Johnson and EMJH).
With a research
proposal funded by TAGEM in 1993, the seroprevalence of leptospirosis
in cattle was detected and a bivalan-killed pilot vaccine has been
prepared for cattle leptospirosis. Sterility, toxicity and potency
tests have been done and field studies have been completed in cattle.
In addition, the seroprevelance study of Lyme disease in human, catle
and sheep, another spirocethal disease, has been started with a fund
from the Turkish Scientific and Technical Association (TUBITAK). ELISA and Western
Blot (WB) techniques are used in the diagnosis of this disease.
